A REPORT ON THE DISCUSSION WITH MY TEACHERS ABOUT MY INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP ROLES IN RELATION TO THE FOUR DOMAINS OF MY FUNCTIONS AS A PRINCIPAL

Before leaving for a seminar in Manila I had a staff meeting with my teachers: 8 elementary and 4 secondary teachers. I asked them to comment on my role as principal and their expectations about me.

Answers varied but most notable are:

Being a role model

Be kind and considerate to teachers

Not be too meticulous

Must know many things more than they know so they could ask help

Teach them how to do things in relation to their job

Provide them with all the necessary materials so they will not have to buy using their own money

Defend them from undue harassment

Be the leader in the community

I explained that my role revolves around, but not limited to, the following:

1. School management

2. School communications

3. School community relations and

4. Instructional supervision

I presented to them the problems I encountered for each domain:

SCHOOL MANAGEMENT

SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS

SCHOOL COMMUNITY RELATIONS

INSTRUCTIONAL SUPERVISION

1. Absenteeism

1. Instructions do not reach the intended subject

1. Parents not supportive in all activities

1. Teachers not ready with their lessons

2. Lack of supplies

2.Teachers sometimes ignore memos sent them

2. Some parents misinterpret school thrusts

2. Teachers lack competence in the art of questioning

3. Disciplinary problems with special students

3. Some PTCA members do not attend meeting called for

3. Barangay officials do not inform the school of any activities that the school can help in

3.Lack of material time to implement teaching innovation training

The teachers were made to brainstorm on the possible solutions to the problems I presented them. The following are their proposed solutions:

School Management

1. Have a dialogue with parents and obtain their commitment to let their children come to school everyday if possible.

2. Allocate from MOOE funds for office supplies

3. Establish classroom discipline/provide activities to divert their attention from mischief

School communications

1. Appoint key person to disseminate memos from the division or district

2. Implement a system of sanctions to teachers who do not take heed to instructions

3. Have a dialogue with PTCA to explain the importance of cooperating with school activities/Have convocations to establish bonding among parents/treachers

School community relations

1. Establish relations with the parents through monthly meeting with the teacher advisers

2. Explain school thrusts through parent teacher conferences

3. Attend Barangay sessions to establish presence in the Barangay officialdom

Instructional supervision

1. Conduct individual coaching

2. Conduct group training through in-house encounters/informal sessions

3. Find time at least two hours after class hours so as not to disrupt classes

These were the proposed solutions through a guided brainstorming. It was tried out and to some extent it worked. But the school is continually finding ways to improve in all four domains.

Insights Gained:

1. School management is a collaborative effort of all the people involved inn the business of education.

2. Eliciting ideas from each other would lessen the burden of the burden in thinking about furthering the school’s goals towards quality education.
